Story of the Yogi in the sleepless sleep! The yogi who inspired Turiya Nada.
Ayya, an enlightened yogi from South India has been meditating in a cave on the mountain Arunachala, regarded by Hindus as one of the most sacred and revered sites. He has been meditating for 18 years, without moving and drinking just a glass of milk a day. Ayya does not sleep as he is said to be in the meditative conscious state that the yogis call, ‘the sleepless sleep” as Turiya. He has provided the inspiration for what has now been rated as the most powerful spiritual music ever recorded. Dr. David R. Hawkins, Phd., M.D. created the highly-regarded Map of Consciousness which has been used in combination with Applied Kinesiology to calibrate the consciousness levels of books, music and movies. Cave of the Siddhars, the CD by Turiya Nada, calibrates at the level of Christ, Buddha, Krishna and Brahman. Out of over 250 CDs calibrated on the Consciousness Multi-Media Database (www.cmmdb.com), Cave of the Siddhars is rated as having the highest spiritual value. Many of the legendary stories about Ayya have been confirmed by those who live on the foothills of the mountain Arunachala, located in Tamilnadu, South India. Ayya stopped eating for three years before climbing up the mountain to meditate continuously. When Ayya had started climbing up the mountain, Rengaswamy, a forager offered to assist in finding Ayya a cave. Ayya, who was maintaining silence, kept signaling ‘no’ to every space, a possible cave that Rengaswamy kept showing him until they reached near the peak of the mountain. Ayya finally chose a place that was a small crevice that did not offer much protection from the cold, high speed wind or sunlight. Rengaswamy at first thought that this strange ascetic was a mad person as it did not seem possible for a person to sit there and meditate for a few hours, totally cut off from civilization and drinking water or food. Rengaswamy left Ayya there to meditate to return back to his home on the foothills and climbed up the mountain the next day and found Ayya in deep unbroken meditation. Rengaswamy kept climbing up the mountain every day and did not want to disturb Ayya but however wanted to offer Ayya food, milk and water. It was the fourth day that Ayya opened his eyes when Rengaswamy eagerly offered Ayya the little food, milk and water he had brought from the foothills. Ayya took just a small portion of the milk and signaled to Rengaswamy that he depended on Source to look after his body. From that day, Ayya drank a cup of milk each day from who ever climbed up to offer it to him. A cup of milk each day was all he had for over two decades!
About four months after Ayya began his meditative penance, Rengaswamy had climbed up the mountain with a pot of wild honey. The sky was overcast with dark clouds. Ayya signaled to Rengaswamy to come near him. Rengaswamy had not really realized the power of this yogi until this moment when it started to rain with high speed wind blowing at the peak of the mountain. Rengaswamy was shocked as not a drop of rain had touched his body or Ayya’s. Rain was pouring all around them just three feet away and yet miraculously, not a drop fell on them. It was after this day that Rengaswamy made it a point to climb above the mountain every day to spend a few moments with this Sage ever since. Ayya is the Siddhar sage who initiated Nandhi, the producer and voice behind the chants of Cave of the Siddhars. Ayya is from a lineage of Siddhar Sages who represent the mystical roots of Hinduism. The Siddhar lineages go beyond thousands of years with the ancient wisdom passed on from guru to disciple through the mantras. While each mantra has the ability to transform our inner and outer world, the Siddhars understand a mantra to be the living presence of all the masters of the lineage- those who chanted the mantra in the past now invoked into the present as the inner lamp lit by the resonance. The mantras of the Siddhars are powerful since they are so easily held by the intellectual mind due to the simplicity and this enables a single pointed focus much like a magnifying glass converging rays of sunlight to intense heat to cause fire. The mind, like sunlight converges in the single thought held, to then be the vast void that holds Source. The sound based Siddhar mantras work with intent and the child like joys of the heart. Much of the teachings of the Siddhars have been kept within the circle of initiates. This is due to the nature of empowerment the mantra enables. The guru mantra given by Ayya contains the sound “Arakara” that is stated to be from Siddhar Thirumulanathar who is revered as the “Grandfather” by most other Tamil Siddhars. The question Ayya asked Nandhi was, “Should Lord Siva appear before you, what will you ask Him for?” Ayya continued, “Asking God for anything is like asking for a hair-pin. The only thing worth asking God for is asking to be God Himself”. What Ayya means is- anything we seek in the human reality plane is temporary for things come and go away. God is the only eternal reality, of which we are a part that is with us forever to realize to Be. Ayya’s mantra is “Ayya, Siva Siva Siva Sivaa, Arakara Arakaraa”. The essence of this mantra is to manifest Lord Siva to be Lord Siva ourselves. Cave of the Siddhars album has been woven with many Tamil Siddhar mantras that invoke the presence of the sages of the Siddhar lineage. Nandhi, who now lives in Santa Monica, California, told us, “It was Ayya, who initiated me into the path of the Siddhars. As a Divine Laundryman, He cleaned me thoroughly and then sent me to the West. He guided me to bring forth the ancient mantras to all saying that the world is now more ready that ever to receive the ancient meditative grace that comes from tapas of the Siddhar Sages” “The Siddhar mantras are extremely potent since they bring together the collective intent of goodness and desire for upliftment of humanity by the lineage of sages who meditated over lifetimes. These mantras manifest, heal, create abundance, burn karma, inspire, guide and protect as the sages become present in the resonance as we chant or tune into the chanting.” said Nandhi. What makes the album even more unique is that Nandhi has incorporated the use of the didgeridoo---an instrument native to Australia---along with harp and percussion, to give the music and chants a healing resonance. “The world is in the middle of a great awakening,” said Nandhi. “In this shift, Sanathana Dharma, the ancient Vedic wisdom blossoms effortlessly through anyone who simply meditates. The recognition of Oneness, the core truth of the philosophy of Advaita, will uplift humanity through the empowered wisdom that comes from the minds entwined in Source. The dream of all the Tamil sages can be expressed in the word, “Saivam Vetri” that means, may our knowing of compassion for all the living as knowing Source, triumph!” To experience the enlightening realms of Cave of the Siddhars- www.nandhi.com/music.htm
